Lady Ranger

After the fall of Arnor and her successor-kingdoms, the remnants of the Dúnedain of the North scattered into Eriador. Some of them gathered in the Angle, a triangle of land in the Trollshaws bordered by the Great East-West Road, the River Hoarwell (Mitheithel), and the River Loudwater (Bruinen). Here they may have built several hidden hamlets or villages.

This lady Ranger is no stranger to the woods of the Trollshaws, and fears no foe that may lurk therein, by day or by night. She knows every deer trail, every hiding place, and every secret glade from the Hoarwell to the Loudwater. She patrols under sun and moon to ensure that no trolls come down from the gorges north of the Road into the Angle, where the hidden village of her folk lies. She is clad in forester’s attire of a fine but durable weave. A checkered leather jack is worn over a green shirt of the softest linen. Her trousers are loosely fitted, allowing her unrestricted movement, for she often climbs trees to ambush foes, or to conceal herself from them. Tall leather boots allow her to wade along the banks of the rivers that border the Angle. Her most beautiful garment is her hooded cloak, embroidered with a detailed pattern of leaves.

I’m so thrilled with the improved image quality of the screenshots now that I’m using Fraps to capture them as suggested in Devonna’s recent guide. Big thanks to Devonna for that awesome tip! I’m also really excited by the way this outfit turned out. I had been wanting to use these leggings for a while, since you don’t see them very often, and when I realized the chest piece had a compatible green in its undyeable segment, the whole thing just kind of fell into place. I do think this cloak, with its beautifully detailed pattern, is one of the unsung heroes of the Shadows of Angmar-era pieces. As all LOTRO outfitting enthusiasts know, some outfits can be a royal pain to put together, but others are just a joy, and this was one of them for me!

  • Head: Traveller’s Hood (purchased — LOTRO Store), umber
  • Shoulders: Lockmaster Shoulder Pads (quest reward — Evendim [38] Sanctity of Sovereigns), dark green
  • Back: Linen Cloak (crafted — tailor T2), sienna
  • Chest: Jacket of the Heartmender (bartered — Tinnudir Wardens of Annúminas quartermaster/Minstrel’s gooods), umber
  • Hands: Gloves of Fém (quest rewards — Angmar [43] Crannog’s Second Challenge), yellow
  • Legs: Ceremonial Leggings of the Seven Stars (bartered — skirmish camp cosmetics quartermaster/Annúminas cosmetic clothing), sienna
  • Feet: Tursur-lhopan (looted — The Foundy/tier 2 Ring-forge of Orthanc), umber

Tips: If purchasing from the Store is not your cup of tea, the Hood of Night (bartered — skirmish camp classic quartermaster/Halls of Night – rare) has the same skin as the Traveller’s Hood (but note that it has a different base colour and so will dye differently than the Traveller’s Hood). Alternatively, you could forego a head cosmetic and replace the Linen Cloak with the Loose Linen Cloak (crafted — tailor T2), which has the same appearance except that it also has a hood. While putting this outfit together, I also noticed that the Traveller’s Cloak and Superb Traveller’s Cloak (both crafted — tailor T3) also look great with this outfit.

That cloak is my favourite, it doesn’t look too fancy but isn’t too plain either. I also think its hard to match those leggings, with the undyeable green part. But you’ve found a great match.

Liked your story this time too, are they your invention? Because I haven’t heard of ‘Angle’ before.

    • Thanks Elenluin! 🙂

The Angle itself is referenced in Appendix A of The Lord of the Rings, in “Annals of the Kings and Rulers”. The Angle also was one of the places where the Stoors had temporarily settled during their migration into Eriador (see Appendix B, entry for c. IIIA 1150). It’s mentioned in the same context in the Prologue as well.

I didn’t make up the bit about Dúnedain settling in the Angle, but in fact the exact source is a bit hard to pin down. Apparantly (according to David Salo) “there is a short but hardly legible note which Tolkien wrote for insertion into the story of Aragorn and Arwen (and which was not in the event used); it includes information about the location of the Dunedain. Because of the difficulty of the note, the information is not entirely clear, but it suggests that the Dunedain lived in woodlands between the Mitheithel and Bruinen. [Source: microfilms at Marquette University, Series 3, Box 9, Folder 3.]”

In any event, it was not incorporated in the finished appendix, so it couldn’t be considered “canon”. There’s a pretty good compilation of the sources here: http://www.henneth-annun.net/resources/places_view.cfm?plid=568

  3. Devonna says:

Wow your screenshots are beautiful! They really bring out the beautiful details of the armour pieces especially the lovely pattern on the cloak. I love this outfit 🙂

  4. Very pretty and I love your girl’s freckles! She looks really sweet. But dangerous!

Oh wow those screenshots are beautiful and the freckles ❤ such a wonderful model. I really like the matching of the gloves to the leggings here, brilliant! 😀

There are not many things that go with those leggings (that I know of). Very nice combination.

The Outrider’s Shoulders (Tailoring T3 medium) look and dye the same as the Lockmaster Shoulder Pads.

This is such a lovely outfit. I made it for my 35 woman hunter! I used the tailored alternatives for the cloak and shoulders, and Gardener’s Boots for the feet, but everything else is the same. I already had the chestpiece on my minstrel and getting the leggings was no problem. She looks so cute I can’t stand it. Thank you for the inspiration!
