Silvan Sentinel

The Silvan Elves of the Third Age were descended from the Nandor of the Elder Days. Called in Sindarin the Tawarwaith, or Forest-folk, Silvan Elves were probably the most numerous of the Elves remaining in Middle-earth by the time of the War of the Ring. They dwelled in the forests they loved, often ruled by Noldorin or Sindarin families, and kept an uneasy eye on the gathering Shadow in the East.

This Elf is a watcher in the woods, a silvan sentinel. He is arrayed in the green hues of his forest home, and his clothing is decorated with autumnal leaves symbolic of the fading of his kind. A close-fitting helm of boiled leather protects his head and face yet leaves his hearing unimpaired, while a mantle and short-sleeved jacket provide freedom of movement. A silken scarf in a delicate celadon-green can prove useful if he sustains an injury that must be bound. Rather than heavy boots, he is shod only in light slippers, for he must be able to move swiftly and silently over the roots and stones of the forest path. No foe can hope to come upon him or his kinfolk at unawares.

As anyone who enjoys creating outfits in LOTRO knows, sometimes you get started on something that seems like it’s never going to work, and this was one of those outfits for me. I wanted to use the Tawarwaith Leggings since they are rarely seen, usually hidden under the popular Tawarwaith Robe. Trying for a less-homogenous outfit than the one you see here, I went through countless variations of helms, shoulders, gloves, and even chest pieces before finally settling on this combination. Then, when it was time to take pictures, the daylight was not cooperating with me, and I had only a few moments of dusk to get some shots. I didn’t get the same variety of interesting poses I usually try for. I hope the outfit and pictures don’t seem subpar thanks to my misadventures! It’s all part of the ups and downs of outfitting. Do you have any frustrating outfitting stories? Please share, if you like!

  • Head: Elven Light Helm (purchased — Rivendell light armour vendor; or looted — world drop/general), Rivendell green
  • Shoulders: Tawarwaith Shoulder Pads (crafted — tailor T6/Malledhrim reputation), dark green
  • Chest: Elven Leather Shirt (purchased — Rivendell medium armour vendor; or looted — world drop/general), sienna
  • Hands: Tawarwaith Gloves (crafted — tailor T6/Malledhrim reputation), dark green
  • Legs: Tawarwaith Leggings (crafted — tailor T6/Malledhrim reputation), dark green
  • Feet: Rock-climber’s Shoes (crafted — tailor T6), Rivendell green

Tips: The helm in this outfit has the same appearance as the Helm of Remmirath (looted — world drop/level 41). Instead of Tawarwaith shoulders and gloves, you could swap in the Rock-climber pieces (crafted — tailor T6) if you’d like to mirror the gold trim on the shoes in the upper body.

  1. I had a similar adventure with those leggings, and ended up combining it with a heavy armour chest!! weeeeh 😀 http://cosmeticlotro.wordpress.com/2011/05/07/wood-elf/

this outfit is exceptional. really untypical, well matched (i would never have thought of matching that shirt with… well, anything :D) and it makes impression of an armour set. i would maybe change the helm (although i share the passion for this one myself and i like the RP defence you made for it) and boots. even the dusk screenshots work beautifully and underline nice colours of this composition. all in all – one of most beautiful and original elven outfit’s i’ve seen 🙂

    • Thank you very much for the kind words, Freyjuska! 😀

This outfit gave me such headaches. I really wanted to use the shoes for the slipper-look instead of the boot-look, but you’re right that the gold trim is awkward. In hindsight, I think I should have used the Footman’s Gloves or Golden Wood gloves dyed Rivendell green, because they also have gold details that would refer to the shoes. Maybe I will have to revisit this one someday with those gloves added in! As for the helm, I used it because I noticed (for the first time!) the undyeable part of the helm matches the undyeable greyish-blue reinforcement on the chest piece… it sort of tied them together, for me.

Anyway, I’m really pleased to hear you liked this one! 🙂

I know exactly how you feel. I’ve had to rush many times to catch the light before night came. I wish sometimes there was a way to toggle day light on when we wanted it. Perhaps to have an edit mode or something where we could enter it to take screenshots and have the light just the way we want. Your shots look great though 🙂

    • Thank you Devonna! I was actually a bit worried that everyone would think this outfit was a bit “meh” but the response seems pretty positive. I guess sometimes those tough attempts where nothing’s going right turn out okay in the end. 🙂

I love the use of the shoulders here, I’ve been in love with them every since I aquired them but never really found anything with the brown to match, but this outfit really works and I’ve never even seen those gloves before I’m definately getting me some of those! ❤
